It’s not just about having the best cycling chamois cream! "But it Helps!"
If you’re a keen cyclist, you’ll know that being outside enjoying the freedom of being on two wheels can also take its toll on your skin. Cyclists chafing is always an open discussion, but you will probably need more than just a chafe cream for cyclists!
Along with the fresh air and the benefits to physical and mental wellbeing, there’s sunburn, wind burn, insect bites and more chafing that you can shake a bicycle pump at to contend with. So the right skincare is essential for protecting your skin, soothing it and making sure it doesn’t start complaining and getting in the way of a perfect ride.
Protecting your vital assets
We don’t need to be too descriptive here, but becoming saddle sore and experiencing chafing ‘down there’ (for the uninitiated, we’re talking about the underside of the genital area and the bottom) is something that afflicts most cyclists, male and female.
It’s sort of unmentionable, but many cyclists will have a pot of chamois crème in their cycling armory, even if they don’t talk about it (or apply it in public). Cyclists Chamois cream has a double whammy of benefits to our most delicate areas – it has an anti-bacterial affect and helps to prevent chafing.
The name exists because the padding in cycling shorts used to be made from beautifully soft chamois leather. But if you’ve ever washed a car, you’ll know that once chamois leather gets wet a few times and then dries, it becomes awfully stiff. Therefore, chamois crème used to be used to soften this leather padding.
Now, with the advent of advanced, technical sportswear, this padding tends to be made from higher-performing materials. But that doesn’t mean that chamois crème has had its day.
Our Anti-Chafe cream is a thick cyclists chamois cream that should be applied to your undercarriage and inner thighs, before you start your ride. It’s preventative more than a cure and will help to prevent saddle sores and abscesses.
Sadly, chamois crème won’t make your skin immune to sores, especially on lengthy rides. So, if you do develop saddle sore, using an anti-chafe cream such as ours will help you get back in the saddle in no time. It’s especially useful overnight in between rides.
And Don't Forget the Sun - Cyclists SPF Sunscreen
It’s not just the rubbing and chafing that might ruin your ride! to come back from a great ride is not only a health concern, but it will leave you pretty uncomfortable for a number of days after.
At Balmy Fox, we have taken cyclists’ sun protection seriously with our new range of all-natural, mineral-based cyclists’ SPF creams and lip balms. Using zinc oxide in a non-chemical-based formula, using our cyclists SPF sun cream, and SPF lip balm, you not only receive sun protection, but a soothing, healing, and moisturising balm that provides many hours of protection.
Protecting other areas of skin whilst you cycle
But as our title suggests, using chamois crème isn’t the only piece of cyclist skincare essential kit. You’ll also need to consider:
- Sunscreen – apply liberally to all of your exposed areas including your face, the back of your neck, the tops of your ears and your thighs. Don’t forget your chest and shoulders if you’re likely to unzip your top or wear a vest. On the Trail cyclists SPF Sunscreen is an all natural mineral based formula, great for you and the planet.

- Lip balm – getting out of breath, feeling hydrated and the harsh effects of the sun and wind can all make your lips cracked and sore. Make sure you use a lip balm that’s oil based and designed to withstand the harshest of environments.
- Insect repellent – if you’re cycling through areas known for their midges and bugs, or near long grass, then you’ll need a spritz of insect repellent before you set off.
- Intense facial moisturiser – cycling against the elements, salt from sweat and leaky eyes will all demand a lot from the skin so replacing lost moisture with an intensely hydrating moisturiser will help. This doesn’t have to be specifically for cyclists but can be any high quality facial moisturiser.
- Repairing hand and foot balms and creams – it’s not just your behind that can get sore when cycling, your hands and feet are under a lot of pressure too. Especially so if it’s raining or you’re cycling through wet, muddy tracks. Hard wearing, yet natural balms and creams are handy on the spot treatments for dry, sore patches of skin.
Balmy Fox products are designed to be used on the go and are effective, tried and tested. If you have active skin, make our balms, rubs and creams part of your go-to cycling kit!
