Para-athletics and the Need for Prosthetic Moisturisers
Perhaps the most beautiful thing about exercise in the Great Outdoors is that it’s inclusive and has no borders. Anyone can get outside and do whatever it is they love doing – hiking, trail running, wild swimming, climbing. The possibilities are endless.
Some of us do though, have extra challenges to exercising. Many of us can pull on our running shoes, choose the right Spotify play list and simply go through the front door. But many more need to take extra steps, make extra preparations or need extra help in order to do the sports they love.
Excitingly, para-athletics groups and activities are now much easier to find and more popular to spectate. This is thanks in great part to the London 2012 Paralympics which saw the UK realising a new love and passion for para sports. Charities and new events such as the Invictus Games help to further this need and love for para-athletics.
If you’re a para-athlete, you’ll know that one of the extra challenges you may face if you’re an amputee, is soreness and irritation where your prosthetics sit. Prosthetic moisturisers and amputee creams may well have become your high friction saviour.
Balmy Fox anti-chafe creams and skin repair balms are made using natural, plant based oils and healing botanicals such as arnica and tea tree oil. Because we believe in inclusivity, we didn’t make them specifically for people with or without amputations. We simply made them because they work for everyone!
They effectively help to prevent and soothe the discomfort of chafing, rubbing and sweating, whatever the cause – clothing against skin, skin against skin or prosthetic against skin.
Whether you’re on the trail, on the slope or on the water, we have a cream, balm or muscle rub for you. They make fantastic prosthetic moisturisers, and can be used as a protective barrier to help prevent damage to your skin caused by your prosthetic or socket friction.
They can also be used on the go, as on the spot treatments when you’re exercising so that you don’t have to let sore areas of skin get in your way of enjoying the things you love. Our creams and balms also contain natural antimicrobial ingredients that help to prevent skin infections caused by bacteria and fungi.
They’re also free from parabens and artificial manmade ingredients, making them kind to your skin and also to the environment. As lovers of the Great Outdoors ourselves, we’re responsible custodians of the earth because if we’re not, our beautiful outdoor spaces won’t be around to enjoy for much longer.
At Balmy Fox, we donate 1% of our net sales to each of a number of charities, including Impossible to Ignore. Impossible to Ignore is an initiative doing great work to further help challenge the perceptions of disability in the UK. Launched by ParalympicsGB, they’re basing their work on research that suggests the key to challenging these perceptions is para-athletes themselves.
So each time you purchase one of our amputee cream-worthy protective skin balms, you’ll be helping to further normalise para-athletics. And what better way to celebrate ALL Team GB athletes?!
