Llanwrytd Wells is a small town located in Powys, Wales. But what this town lacks in size, it more than makes up for in heart. Llanwrytd Wells is the home of the annual Man vs Horse race.

This race has been going on for over thirty years and has become a bit of a tradition. The race is simple enough: competitors run (or ride) from Llanwrytd Wells to the top of the hill and back. The first person to cross the finish line is the winner.

What makes this race so special is that it’s not just man against horse it’s man against nature. The course is made up of steep hills and rough terrain, and there’s no telling who will come out on top. The History of the Race and Llanwrytd Wells

What started as a joke between two friends in 1980 is today one of the most famous and talked-about green events in all of Mid Wales.

The Man vs Horse race was the brainchild of local farmer Gordon Green and his friend Jock Mcauley, who were enjoying a pint after their sheepdog trials when the conversation turned to which animal could win a race? They decided it should be Man vs Horse and wrote up a signboard advertising their idea. The event has been held each June ever since.

Today, over 2000 people come to the small town of Llanwrtyd Wells to witness this wonderful event which has grown from just 6 people in 1980. The competitors come from all over the world, some on horseback and some on foot, but only one human has ever won! (The first Man to win was Huw Lobb in 2004!)

With decades-long traditions and passionate competitors, this is surely one example of how the smallest towns do have the biggest hearts!
