Ethical Choices
Every Spring, Fairtrade Fortnight has taken place—albeit online, for the last few years. It’s an event that brings individuals, groups, and companies together from across the UK; an opportunity to share stories of the farmers, growers and individuals behind our food and drinks, who mine natural materials and grow our cotton. It’s a place where discussions can be made about individuals so often underpaid or exploited. This year’s event, ‘Choose the World you Want Festival’ takes place online from 21 February to 6 March and Balmy Fox are delighted to be involved.
The Balmy Fox Ethos
Balmy Fox’s ethos and passion lies in researching, manufacturing and delivering a positively different range of natural skincare products for active outdoor people using organic and natural ingredients that work. Where possible, we always try to source and use ingredients that benefit the customer together with those who produce the ingredients, including their wider community. We want to enhance people’s wellbeing, starting at the very beginning of our product’s journey—the communities, forests and fields from which the ingredients we use in our formulas come.
Ethical Ingredients
Our ethical skincare range starts with our growers and suppliers from around the world using organic and sustainable practices where possible. Currently, we use around 80% organic and ethically sourced ingredients, but we want to become fully accredited as an organic company. Our mission is that as soon as ingredients become available to us organically sourced from ethical farms and plantations, we’ll be super quick to incorporate them into our formulations.
An example of this is Kahai Oil that comes from the Cacay Nut in South America. It’s high in vitamin A and E and Linoleic Acid, making it perfect for hydration. Farmers who were once forced to grow cocaine now produce this natural moisturising marvel now featured in many of our skincare products! Another example would be our beeswax, which makes a great humectant to lock in moisture. It’s sourced from our own farm bees right here in Wales. And our Dog Rose Hip Oil, rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids and essential for tissue and cell regeneration, is from the UK too. Our Hemp Seed Oil harvested in Canada and New Zealand is rich in essential fatty acids to support the skin’s natural repair cycle, and our cocoa butter, extracted from the cocoa bean in South America and West Africa, is the perfect moisturising additive to deliver lasting hydration.
Sharing the Ethical Love
Balmy Fox is also happy and eager to donate 10% of our profits to environmental projects and social causes that support a sustainable and fair natural world. We want to raise awareness and support organisations that make a difference in the world—we’re currently partnered with Plastic Oceans, the World Land Trust, and Paralympics GB.
Even if you’re not directly involved with Fairtrade Fortnight, we can all take a moment to consider where our food, drink and other products come from and how that impacts the environment and communities. When you eat that piece of chocolate, are the growers behind the cocoa beans paid fairly? When you wear your newly bought cotton t-shirt, was the worker in the cotton field being exploited? Taking a little time to consider what we buy and where we purchase it can make a difference to our environment and its people worldwide. Don’t just buy because it’s easy—choosing ethical products and companies does make a difference!
